Ode to Haters

Let's give thanks.

Ode to Haters!

I heard someone say the phrase "your haters are your greatest motivators." And I thought I should take time out of my day today to give thanks to my haters. Honestly, they push you to do better, be better. They test your character. Can you be the recipient of slander or deception and not protest or defend yourself, but instead put your head down and DO THE WORK? Can you keep your unwavering focus, not be thrown off, not take the bait? At the very least they guide you by showing you what not do, how not to act, and where not to be. Yes, you helped them and they were ungrateful. Yes you were kind to them and they paid you back with cruelty. You loved them, and they turned their back on you. They taught you a lesson that Stoics and Buddhists teach: non-attachment.

I love this zen koan: Is That So? A neighborhood girl is pregnant and she names a nearby respected elder Zen master as the father. His reputation is ruined. The parents come to him angry and all he says is: Is that so? They demand he take care of the child which he lovingly does. A year later the young girl-mother reveals the truth: the father is a young man who works at the nearby fish market. The parents go to the Zen master to apologize and hope to take back the child. In yielding the child to them all the master says is: Is that so?

Is that so? Is that so?

If my haters didn't throw stones at me on what would I sharpen the blade of my intuition? You threw bricks at me, and I built a house. You threw stones at me and I built a patio. You threw dirt on me—I planted a vibrant garden. And now you are looking at me in my house, sitting on my patio, enjoying my garden and you want a house like that, too, but when you turn around you see that you have no bricks, no stones and no dirt: you gave them all to me.

Ruminating on this, I had an urge to listen to a song I haven't heard or thought about in a decade: T.I.'s Live Your Life, with Rihanna. Sure, enough, it's right on topic—about haters:

Never mind what haters say,

Ignore them 'til they fade away.

Amazing they ungrateful after all the game I gave away.

Safe to say I paved the way for you cats to get paid today.

You still be wasting days away, nah had I never saved the day.

Consider them my protégé, homage I think they should pay.

Instead of being gracious, they violate in a major way.

I never been a hater still I love them in a crazy way.

Some say they sold the yay and no they couldn't even work on Labor Day.

T.I.’s haters couldn’t even get work on Labor Day! That’s a sad fate. Shoulda been nicer to their friend. Rihanna flawless in style, gesture, and delivery as per her usual standard of excellence. Which got me to Jay-Z's Run This Town with Rihanna and Kanye. It sounds like a group of people are chanting "work, work, work" in the background. Back to the put your head down and work theme. The words this trio sing over a decade ago ring like a prophecy as today all three are billionaires:

Only thing that's on my mind

Is who's gon' run this town tonight

Is who's gon' run this town tonight

We gon' run this town!

We are, yeah, I said it: WE ARE

Everyone wears masks in the video, so in addition to achieving their goals they accurately time-stamped their manifestation as well. Is that so? Yes, it’s so.

Last week I posted: when the shit hits the fan, be the fan. Meaning: keep spinning, keep going. Yes, you got hit with that shit. But you didn’t throw it. Become a magician, an alchemist and spin that shit into GOLD.

So, thank your haters, they are your biggest FANS propelling you to stardom out of their orbit.

When they spew the haterade BS: is that so? When they come to apologize: is that so? Do what needs to be done: take care of the orphaned baby (The Work) with the utmost care and without complaint or possessiveness.

Is that so? Yes, it’s so.

And keep living your life, because there’s no telling where it will take you.

So I keep doing my own thing
Walking tall against the rain
Victory's within the mile
Almost there, don't give up now
Only thing that's on my mind
Is who's gon' run this town tonight
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Who's gon' run this town tonight?
